Tower visitors take part in The Big Draw

On Saturday 2nd October, family visitors had the chance to create a piece of art work as part of the Big Draw initiative. As the theme of the day was “prisoners”, the art work was based on the prisoner inscriptions in the Beachamp and Salt Towers. One particular inscription, a rebus (or word picture) was used as inspiration.

Thomas Abel was the personal chaplain of Catherine of Aragon. He was imprisoned for his refusal to accept the annulment of Catherine’s marriage to Henry VIII, and carved this rebus of his name into the walls of the Beauchamp Tower during his imprisonment.

Family members created their own inscription bricks for display using card, stencils and spray felt pens. They were asked to create an inscription or image that represented them or their family name. The resulting inscriptions were very creative and will be displayed together as an inscription wall in the education centre.

Children also had the chance to decorate their own swords using a variety of sparkly jewels, and to create their own portraits of famous Tower prisoners whilst learning about their stories.
